How to Get Promoted?
There is no single achievement that will get you
promoted. Soldiers must be the best in all areas of
performance in order to make the cut off scores.

ARMY PROMOTION POINTS FOR THE ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (APFT)
Army Physical Fitness Test (160 points maximum for E5-SGT; 100 points maximum E6-SSG)
Physical fitness test (sit-ups, push-ups, and 2-mile run) must be done according to applicable Army training regulations
and field manuals. To qualify for promotion points, a Soldier must attain a minimum score of 60 points on each event.
Promotion points for Soldiers with waived events are outlined below:
(a) Soldiers with permanent physical profiles for the sit-up and/or push-ups events will be granted 60 points for each
event waived while using the actual score for each event actually taken. These Soldiers must qualify on the 2-mile run or
approved alternate test according to TC 3-22.20.
(b) Effective 1 Apr 95, Soldiers taking an alternate event for the 2-mile run receiving a GO, receive a score for that event
equal to the average of the scores for the other two events.
(c) Soldiers with permanent profiles resulting from combat related operations as defined in DODI 1332.28 who are unable
to take an aerobic or alternate APFT event due to a permanent physical profile will use their last APFT score until the
Soldier is medically cleared to take the APFT. If the Soldier’s last score was a failing score, that Soldier will be granted a
minimum qualifying score of 60 points for each APFT event. The provisions of AR 600-8-4 must be met before application
of this paragraph.
(a) Soldiers with a temporary profile that prohibits taking one or more events of the APFT will continue to use their current
APFT score as a determinate for promotion points provided it is not more than 1 year old.
(b) If the Soldier was afforded an opportunity to take the APFT and failed, or through his or her own negligence (as
determine by the unit commander) failed to take the test, the Soldier will lose the APFT points.
(c) Soldiers with temporary physical profiles resulting from combat related operations as defined in DODI 1332.28 will
compute promotion points as follows (the provisions of AR 600-8-4 must be met before application of this paragraph):
(1) AA, AGR and TPU Soldiers with a temporary profile that prohibit taking one or more events of the APFT will use their
current APFT score provided it is not more than 2 years old at the time of the promotion point computation.
(2) IRR Soldiers with a temporary profile that prohibit taking one or more events of the APFT will use their current APFT
score provided it is not more than 3 years old at the time of the promotion point computation.
